  2. Andrew   thanks, in fact this post came out of me going to such a talk a cpuloe of months ago and getting rather confused.divalent   the stromatolite issue is tricky. People have argued that stromatolites older than 3 billion years or so are simple’ in structure, and hence might be formed by non-biological chemical precipitation processes (like the rings in stalagmites). However,  argues for morphological complexity even in the oldest examples. You can argue morphological evidence either way; what you really need is fossils or diagnostic biomarkers associated with these things.And sadly the proper billion battle was lost long before I took up linguistic arms   I’m still fighting a rearguard action to save palaeo from extinction, though
