Our father, Gershon Bineth, immigrated to Israel from Hungary in October 1939. During his sea voyage he met the man who would become his business partner once they settled in Israel. Together they established the Ambit plastics factory in Pardes Hanna. Over the years our father developed a great interest in Israeli art. He began to visit artists’ studios and exhibitions and acquire their paintings. In 1962 he decided to open an art gallery in Jerusalem and the Bineth Gallery of Fine Art was born. Within a very short time it became one of the country’s leading art galleries.
Until his death in 1973 at the age of 57, our father’s interests expanded into related fields including ancient art and archeology, Judaica, old jewelry, rare books and fine carpets. Paintings by the best Israeli artists hanging in the gallery could be viewed together with several show cases filled with ancient pottery, oil lamps and Phoenician and Roman glass. The unique combination of ancient and contemporary art, displayed in the same space, was exceptional among local galleries.
The glass collection documented in this catalog was formed in a short period of time, about ten years. Our father’s way of acquiring antiquities was part of his generosity and assertiveness: he bought a great deal, rapidly and with no hesitation. He developed personal relations with antiquity dealers and studied the subject to an extent that he was able to date the objects and distinguish between the common and the rare. Exceptionally important items were set in expensive handmade leather boxes.
Collecting ancient glass became a great passion and joy for our father. As a result the beautiful glass objects surrounded him in his office and at our home.
