My Adventure with Coins

We arrived in Israel at the end of April 1969 – my wife, 2 school age daughters and I and moved into our bungalow on the high dunes of Afridar, Ashqelon. The region around “migdal hamaim” – the water tower – was not heavily built up – a pleasant area of “villas” as they are called here (the expression “single family house” was unknown). Pretty soon, one got to be on talking terms with most neighbors. People were curious to ask a Swiss why he had made aliyah at all. In Switzerland, they thought, everything must be a lot more organized, more beautiful and better than here. Of course, they also wanted to know how much we paid for our house. For someone from Switzerland, both questions were difficult to answer and lead to discussions. One of the neighbors, who had lived in this area for a long period of time, was called Chaim Yashin. Chaim worked as a textile salesman in Tel Aviv but his world was his hobby: coins. Ancient coins. This was not a new hobby. He owned a collection of old Russian coins and was now interested in ancient Jewish coins. He told me stories from the history of those days and showed me his collection.

I must admit that I became enthusiastic quite quickly. Can one really find and acquire coins that lay in the hands of men and women who lived in this country 2000 years ago and who bore names from ancient writings such as Shimon Bar Kochba, Pontius Pilate and Herod? My Zionistic idealism was mixed with curiosity and Romanticism. The time was indeed opportune – the situation had ‘normalized’ after the events of the Six Day War. People from the “field” – Jews, Arabs and of course officials interested in archeology began to search for coins, dig for coins and relatively many specimens came into the open.

Chaim knew his way around the world of locally available coins. He knew the most important collectors and dealers and was a leading member of the Numismatic Society based in the Haaretz Museum in Tel Aviv. He was also well versed in the history of the period in which “Jewish” coins were minted. I was an attentive student and took up this knowledge enthusiastically. He was delighted to find a partner with whom he could share his hobby right in his own neighborhood. I also had a way of reciprocating – Chaim did not drive and thus we drove together in my car on many Saturdays to Jerusalem or Bethlehem to look for coins.

The main and richest source was a young Greek-Catholic Arab dealer from Bethlehem called Kando. This rather slightly built young man had been introduced to the “profession” by his father. The father became known in connection with the discovery and sale of the famous scrolls of Qumran near the Dead Sea to the Hebrew University Prof. Sukenik (the father of Yigael Yadin). He seems to have made some money with the scrolls, which he used to set up an antiquities shop for his son in Bethlehem and for buying himself a hotel in Jerusalem where he set up a similar shop (but where we only rarely found anything of interest). The antiquities shop of Kando Junior was a very modest place in the main street of Bethlehem, not far the central square with the Christian Church of Nativity. As you came inside there were display cases on the right and left with ancient ceramic, glass and a few ancient metal artifacts. No coins. In the background stood an enormous desk and behind it Kando Junior. If he had a visit, then he would bid him a hasty farewell and turn to us. First coffee, family and politics. Then he would slowly bring out for us his latest acquisitions in a kind of ceremony whereby the longer it lasted, the more beautiful and valuable were the coins he presented. This was intended and set us in a heated state of anticipation, affecting me, of course, more than Chaim. The coins were examined with a magnifying glass and their history and year of issue were discussed. In cases with overstamping (see below) we listened to relevant explanations. Finally the price was mentioned. This part of the conversation was usually handled by Chaim who had much more experience than me. In most cases there was a discount but Kando was, despite his youth, clever enough to know how to handle regular customers who were market-savvy. On especially successful occasions he made us a present of an ancient oil lamp from the same period or invited us to lunch. He was a very good salesman. There was full trust on both sides. When he showed us especially valuable pieces which I desired but did not have enough money on me (I never bought on credit), he would let me take the coin with me saying “So we shall meet in fourteen days with the money or with the coin”. Once I returned a very beautiful coin (which I regret to this day). On another occasion I asked for and was allowed to pay in 3 installments. Everything took place without written agreements. After both Chaim and I became buyers, there were times when only one piece was available for both. On such occasions I would, of course, yield to Chaim and give him precedence.

There are many more interesting anecdotes to recount but this would lead us too far off the mark in this introduction. At the end of the 70’s it seemed that the sources have dried out. The attitude to Palestinians deteriorated as well. In the mid 80’s my wife became ill and passed away in the beginning of 1981. This brought to an end the main period of my acquisitions. The Moslem pressure on the Christian population in Palestine increased and the Kando family left their homeland to look for a safer future in America.

The Jewish coins

I think a short historical background of “Jewish coins” would make the collection described in the catalogue more understandable.
The use of coins made of a precious metal as a method of payment appeared first in the Eastern Mediterranean world at the end of the 7th century BC, especially in areas under Greek cultural influence. Thus, in the time of King David and Salomon coins were unknown. The first Jewish coins (i.e. coins with Hebrew script and not necessarily with Jewish symbols) appeared in the Holy Land in the 4th century BC, when Judea was a Persian Satrapy, following the return of the Jews from the Babylonian captivity to Jerusalem under Ezra and Nehemia at the end of the 6th century BC. In this context, tiny silver coins with the inscription Yehud were minted. I avoided this series because most exemplars were too small and unprepossessing (~2.5 mm diameter with a weight of 0.2g) and yet were very expensive at the time. It should be remarked however that the current 1-shekel coin was modeled after a sample from this series.

Small Judea seems to have lived in peace under the rule of the religiously tolerant Persians (the Achaemenid dynasty was the first to establish itself as a major power in the ancient world between 550-330 BC) but did not mint additional coins. One should note that at the same time fierce battles were waged between the Persians and the Greeks (Marathon!) and that a large part of the Persian army consisted of Greek troops from the Greek states in western Anatolia. In 335-325 BC Alexander the Great appeared, destroyed the powerful Persian Empire and established a Greek world power. But he died in Babylon in 323 BC and the Asian parts of his Empire were divided between his generals – Seleukos (who inherited modern Turkey and the

neighboring eastern territories) and Ptolemy (who inherited the Phoenician Coast and Egypt). Small Judea experienced no difficulties with the Ptolemies. Soon after, however, the powerful generals began to fight with each other and the Phoenician Coast and its hinterland, including the Jewish state and Jerusalem fell under Seleucid rule. Religious tolerance disappeared. The Seleucid rulers tried to enforce Greek culture in their dominions. This did not go down well with the Jews who rebelled under the Maccabean movement and managed to regain control of the Temple and a certain religious and political autonomy under the leadership of the Hasmoneans. However, which of these two possessed absolute power is evinced by the huge difference between the small and humble bronze coins of the Hasmoneans and the beautiful large silver and gold coins of the Seleucids.

Then the Romans appeared as a major power, bringing the Greek Eastern Mediterranean step by step under their control. The Hasmonean Kingdom was handed to Herod the Great, the greatest builder Judea has ever seen. But his coins remained similar to those of his predecessors. After Herod’s horrible death, the Romans did not allow any more Jewish kings. Instead, they appointed as their representatives Roman generals as governors, the most famous of which was Pontius Pilate, and these continued to issue small coins of low denominations.

The Jews were very opposed to this change. Taxes were raised, levies for the Roman military were demanded and activity around the Temple was suppressed. An anti- Roman movement was organized in the 60’s CE which intensified and lead to open resistance in 66 CE. The aim was to topple Roman control over Judea and Jerusalem and to re-establish the Temple as a religious center. One of the most important civil tasks undertaken by the leaders of the rebellion was the minting of silver coins to demonstrate the new power to the entire nation and to its neighbors. As the country was in a reasonably good economic situation, a sufficient amount of silver was available for stamping coins bearing the year count since the liberation of Jerusalem, their value and images of holy objects from the Temple.

The intensity of the rebellion took the Romans by surprise. Concurrently, they experienced certain political difficulties in their own capital. Finally, Emperor Vespasian appointed his own son, Titus, as the leading general against the uprising in Judea. To leave no doubt regarding his intentions, Titus recruited several additional legions to the region. All these actions prolonged the duration of the rebellion to nearly 5 years. This is why we find coins from 5 annual series, each containing 2-4 types of coins. The lower denominations are in bronze and the higher in silver. By the 5th year the situation became so critical that only a few coins could be minted. Only 14 such coins are known today and consequently are extremely valuable.
The rebellion seems to have cost many lives also among the Roman legions. On his return to Rome, Titus refused the customary triumph (later, however, the “Arch of Titus” was built in Rome to commemorate his triumph and Vespasian named him his heir as Emperor). Subsequently, the Romans issued two series of triumphal coins (JUDAEA CAPTA). The series of higher denominations was minted in Rome and of the lower in Caesarea. The purpose of these coins was to show the world who was the boss and to discourage rebellions of this nature. On the obverse, the coins also publicized the portrait of the victor. The temple in Jerusalem was razed, Jewish service was forbidden and the population was decimated by the large number of deaths and exiles. Life went on nonetheless, Rabbis yielded to the Authorities and established the practice of Judaism in synagogues i.e. in the absence of a national religious center. But life was poor and oppressed and the population dreamt of “the good old times”. I would like to add here that a Jewish eyewitness and survivor of the rebellion called Flavius Josephus composed a report about it – “The Jewish War” – which is still accessible to us nowadays.

After a mere 60 years, 2-3 generations later, memories of the horrific scenes of destruction of the Temple were forgotten. The difficult circumstances at the time lead to new dreams about the Temple. This was the basis for the uprising of BAR KOCHBA. The rabbis were unable to dissuade the people from the absurd plan. Surely, many people and some rabbis believed that God would not forsake his people again. The rebellion broke out in 132 CE. Silver coins were issued despite the fact that the impoverished country did not possess any silver. For this reason, all Roman silver coins in circulation (Denarii and Tertradrachm) were collected, made into blanks and stamped over with the symbol of the freedom movement (although this act was punishable by death for revilement of Imperial portraits). Interesting specimens are those where parts of the original portraits and inscriptions are still visible despite the overstamping. The collection includes 3 original types of Roman denarii which were stamped over. Again, each year a series in silver and bronze was issued.

The Romans waged war with extreme brutality. Any member of the population that fell into their hands was either murdered or enslaved. People hid themselves in the many caves located in the mountains and hilly country on both sides of Jerusalem. This is where some of the described coins were found. Three years later, in 135 CE, the last stronghold (Betar, west of Jerusalem) fell without any survivors.

This brought an end to the Jewish national history in Palestine. But the dream of a return to Jerusalem was cherished for two thousand years. Happily, it seems to have fulfilled itself in our generation after the horrible catastrophe of the Holocaust.

I need to mention another series of coins issued in Palestine during the period discussed here. This series is not really related to Judaism but often appears together with Jewish coins: The city coins of Palestine. There are large numbers of these coins which are mostly of bronze. They were issued by many cities for their own use or for the areas immediately around them. In the southern part of the country alone there were five cities: Ashqelon, Gaza, Rafiah, Anthedon and Eleutheropolis (Beit Govrin). I have a few exemplars of these series, which, needless to say, do not have any Jewish writing on them. They show the Emblem and God of the city on one side and the current imperial portrait on the other and repeat themselves annually. It is interesting that this type of coins exist also from Aelia Capitolina (Jerusalem after the Second Revolt).
A final remark: The collection includes 2 “Shekels of Tyre”. These are not considered Jewish coins but it is believed that some were minted in Jerusalem and were used for the payment of the Temple Tax.
